LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Actions speaker louder than words. walk the talk. where the rubber meets the road...

(enough with the cliches)

i met a man a number of years ago from another country, living and working here legally.
he is a few years younger than i and his english is better than most in the kitchen-yet not good enough
for us to enjoy full conversation. his mind is alert and inquiring...
stock market, 401 k, tell me about...

some periods for him are great, overtime available. he works hard and good.
some not so great. no o.t. (you get used to it but hey, that's the way it works)

i counseled him- go get a part-time job. then arrange your hours between the 2 the best you can.

he did.

now he is working 6 days a week-steady (as i)
he's pulling 60 hours a week(10 or so less than i-i said- he's younger)

our kitchen manager comes to me about 6 months later- i am leaving
transfer-to his betterment.

"who's coming in to replace?"

"no one. front of the house will have to pitch in."

"no no no this is not going to work..."

"they are trying to save money by cutting admin cost."

"hear me out-rico is working 6 days-60 hours for $700 a week.
offer him a day-50 hour work week for same. he will jump at the chance-he speaks spanish
and he will be the lowest paid kitchen manager in the company"
"go sell it to inter-galactic ivory white tower headquarters"

he did (with a little help from his friends)

and now rico is the kitchen boss.

and now rosaria and maria have taken on 2nd jobs...

PS: protect your eggs in multiple baskets...

(don't quit your day job)

at the end of the day...

((i said: no more cliches)
